- Beetljuice (PG)
"If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane, and I will take you with me! ..." - Delia Deetz After Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes and teen daughter Lydia buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia. THE MENU Sandworm Juice, Day-O Shrimp Cocktail, Duffy's Cantonese Food, and Black & White Cookies Sandworm juice: Once you see the movie you'll know why I decided to have these adorable but very big worms from the afterlife be part of the menu. You can follow the recipe at cookingchanneltv.com Day-O Shrimp Coacktail: I of course had to include the shrimp cocktail from the very famous scene where the Deetz's are dancing around the table to the Day-O song. It's like the best part of the movie! I used Trader Joe's fully cooked frozen shrimp (delicious by the way). For the sauce I mixed ketchup, diced onion and cilantro with lime juice. Yumm! Duffy's Cantonese Food: There is a scene where the Deetz's are having dinner in their new home. If you look closely at the take out boxes you can see it was from a local place called Duffy's. The family obviously didn't enjoy the dinner and to think of it I might not either if I was eating Cantonese from a place called Duffy's. I will be ordering in for the family from our favorite local Chinese food place (Gourmet Wok). Black & White Cookies: The use of color through out this movie is very dramatic and I very much enjoyed how whimsical it was. I think that's why no matter how old this movie is it just never looks outdated. One thing for sure was the use of the colors black and white. So for desert we'll be having some black & white cookies. These are actually a thing and a lot of stores carry them so feel free to pick some up or make them yourself. You can find the recipe here at Sally's Baking Addiction. Alt: You can also buy jumbo size marshmallows and dip half of it in melted chocolate wafers Q&A with the kids 1. What would've been a good compromise so that both families could live together? 2. Would you have called on Beetlejuice to help you? Why or why not? 3. Who was your least favorite character? Why?
- SHARK TALE (PG)
"You need to slay a shark, and I need to disappear. Here's what we're gonna do... - Lenny Underachiever Oscar (Will Smith) is a pint-sized fish with grand aspirations. When mob-connected great white shark Frankie is accidentally killed, Oscar concocts a story with Frankie's peace-loving brother Lenny (Jack Black) that it was he who murdered the shark. Suddenly hailed "Sharkslayer" by his aquatic brethren, Oscar has bigger fish to fry when Frankie's father, mob boss Don Lino, dispatches his henchmen to track down his son's killer. THE MENU Seaweed Snacks, Lenny's Fish Tacos, Crab Apples, and Candy Sushi *No fish were harmed in the making of this menu Seaweed Snacks: This whole moovie is about the sea and sea creatures so I had to include the roasted seaweed snacks. They are salty and smokey and DELICIOUS!! Our family favorite is the #TraderJoes brand. My kids eat this up daily. Lenny's Fish Tacos: Lenny is a shark who is also a #vegetarian in this moovie and my favorite character so I couldn't in good conscience serve up actual fish so for this weeks menu we will be having vegetarian tacos. You can follow the recipe @potatogoodness.com/recipes/crispy-potato-tacos/. These are delicious!! ALT: If you don't like potatoes for some rare reason feel free to use roasted cauliflower instead. They are just as good. Crab Apples: My kids LOVE #apples and you can transform them into almost anything. These were so so easy to make! You can watch the tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL3p9BbBlnU NOTE: for the eyes I used two long black sprinkles and pushed them into the apple but use whatever you have at the house, no need to go buy anything. Candy Sushi: These were an absolute hit with my kids BUT they are a little time consuming and I know we all don't have that kind of time especially during the week. My advice, buy ready made rice krispie treats, it saves a lot of time and if you want, make them the day before, they last a while OR depending on how old your kids are let them make it! You can find the step by step instructions @ stylishspoon.com/2015/06/03/kids-parties-sushi-rice-krispies-treats/ Q&A with the kids 1. What sea creature would you be if you were in this movie? 2. 3.
- INDEPENDENCE DAY (PG-13)
"...We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive!.." - President Whitmore The skies ignite. Terror races through the world's major cities. As extraordinary events unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that a force of incredible magnitude has arrived. Its mission: total annihilation over the Fourth of July weekend. The last hope to stop the destruction is an unlikely group of people united by fate and unimaginable circumstances. THE MENU Energy Canon Soda, Berry Brave Skewers, Freedom Dogs and Out of This World Cupcakes Berry Brave Skewers: Through out the moovie the bravery of man is tested and a lot of them risk their lives during this war with the UFO's so I thought these would be a sweet start to the meal. For step by step instructions click here. Freedom Dogs: There wasn't a lot of food mentioned in this moovie but it takes place around and during the 4th of July so I went with our most traditional meal during this holiday HOT DOGS! Add your favorite side, I went with BBQ flavored chips since there was a lot of things that got barbecued in this movie (aka, a lot of explosions) Energy Canon Soda: There were some very big explosions that happen in the moovie the most fatal were caused by the spaceships energy canon. Simply get some glow in the dark sticks at the #99centstore. Get the skinny ones that you can turn into bracelets and stick it in a cold glass of Squirt, the cloudiness of the soda will make it glow very nicely and if you add ice it will look even cooler. NOTE: Make sure you wash the glow sticks and make sure they aren't broken before sticking them in your drink. Out of This World Cupcakes: My kids loved these and I very much enjoyed decorating them. You can follow the recipe here at sweetestkitchen.com or simply buy your favorite flavor of boxed cake and then decorate your cupcakes with your favorite lollipop flavor and some M&M's (that's what I did) Tip: Remember those glow sticks you bought? Add them to this dessert as well (shown in the pic below). I placed them from the bottom up. Tip: The little cups that cover the lollipops can be purchased at the 99 cent store. Q&A with the kids 1. If we had an alien invasion and you can go live on any other planet you want where would you go? How would your life be different there? 2. Give an example of a time when you were brave. How did you feel afterwards? 3. What is the first thing you would do if you walked outside your house one morning and saw a very big UFO.?
- Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (PG)
"You feel it. When you really believe in something despite everyone telling you you're wrong." - Pikachu Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery. THE MENU Pikachu Burgers, Substance "R" and a Pokemon Donut Pikachu Burgers Burgers! It was the obvious choice for this movie and my kids loved them! You don't even have to make the burgers at home, pick them up from your favorite take out place and just decorate them at home. Decorating does take some time and patience, luckily I only had to make (2) of them but they were a hit and totally worth it. NOTE: I'm using toothpicks here but feel free to use raw spaghetti to hold the eyes and cheeks in place. Also, for the eyes you can use pieces of onions instead of carrots and black olives instead of seaweed. NOTE: The ears took several tries but I found it best to use kitchen scissors. Use a lighter to burn the ears but DON'T eat them, they are only for show and taste like lighter fluid. NOTE: Add the nose and mouth last otherwise it can create a mess and/or smudge. Substance "R" In the movie there was a purple gas substance that was making the Pokemon go crazy when they inhaled it and as I was researching for my drink I came across this tea called "butterfly tea" the flowers turn the water into a dark blue but whats so cool about it is that when you mix it with a lemon juice (lemonade) it creates this beautiful gradient cloud of purple inside your glass! and if that wasn't a seller then just know that it's actually full of antioxidants and very good for you. Your kids will be wowed. TIP: You won't find this tea at your local grocery store. I ended up ordering it from Amazon. 1. Boil 3 cups of water then turn off heat. 2. Add 1/2 cup of the butterfly flowers and let it steep for 15min. 3. Strain flowers and refrigerate the dark blue water to cool. 4. In a glass cup fill 3/4 with lemonade and pour in the chilled Butterfly Tea. You will see it turn purple right before your eyes. Pokemon Donuts I was determined to use the Pokemon ball in my menu so I figured out a way to do just that. Whats circular and is so so good? Donuts! I wasn't even going to attempt to make them at home so I figured I would go to my local donut shop and order them there but unfortunately they couldn't do 1/2 colors so I just ordered 6 reds with red sprinkles and 6 whites. They were very easy to put together. Tip: Pikachu drank a lot of coffee in the movie so feel free to have some with your donut. I gave my kids a very small cup of decaf, which they very much enjoyed. Q&A with the kids 1. Would you be OK with Pokemon's and humans living together? How would the world benefit from it? 2. Which Pokemon would you take in as a pet? What kind of problems would arise? 3. Tim had a team of people he trusted to help him on his adventure? Which two people and which 2 pokemon would you take on your next adventure?

Any and all amounts are greatly appreciated. Thank you. #shermanheightscc #sd_diadelosmuertos THE MENU Ofrenda de Fruta, Arroz de Muerto and "Remember Me" Hot Coco Ofrenda de Fruta There is no day of the dead without the altar. As you'll see in the movie the altar is a huge part of this beautiful celebration so I wanted to incorporate this into our meal and what better way then to light a candle and then eat it! This fruit altar, believe it or not is pretty simple, yes it will make a mess but I had a lot of fun decorating it. You can choose to only make one candle instead of the three, either way it will make a stunning centerpiece and your family and friends will be wowed! NOTE: The ingredients above is what you'll need to make a 3 candle altar like the one I'm showcasing but you might need more depending on how many your doing. Jicama: Is a Mexican yam bean. (shown on image above) Saladitos: Are plums which are dried and salted. (shown on image above) Tajin: A unique blend of mild chilli peppers, lemon and sea salt. (shown on image above) Peel the jicama and cut circular pieces as shown in image #1. From one of the circular pieces cut out a rectangular shape (get it as tall as you can). Cut bottom of jicama as leveled as you can then curve the top as shown in picture above (remember your trying to make it look like a candle). Place toothpick at bottom of jicama (you might have to cut toothpick in half) and set aside for now or repeat depending on how many candles your going to make. NOTE: The jicama is a root so it can be a little tough to cut. Also, because there's a lot of cutting I don't recommend this for little kids. They will however enjoy eating it! 4. Cut the ends of the cucumber and set aside (we'll use these parts later). 5. Slice cucumber in half as shown above then set aside. 6. Cut your mango. Try and get a big chunk of it without cutting into the bone of the fruit, remember we don't need that much just enough for the flame of the candle. 7. Once you got your piece remove the skin of the mango with your knife, it should glide right through like butter. 8. Cut out your flame, give it a diamond like shape. 9. Pour some Tajin into a small bowl. 10. Dip your mango flame into the Tajin as shown above and set aside. 11. Now to assemble! Grab the long half piece of the cucumber and place face down on your plate. Grab your jicama candle and attach it to the cucumber with the toothpick you inserted earlier. 12. Insert another toothpick at the top of your candle (you will have to cut the toothpick in half). One of the reasons I choose black toothpicks was to make it look like the wick, it's subtle but it does the trick. 13. Place you Tajin dipped mango flame on to the top of your candle and voila!! 14. You can add pretty much any fruit you'd like, get creative with it. In the picture above I have mandarin with sprinkled Tajin and a saladito in the center, a kiwi with a half of grape, strawberries, lime slices and remember those cucumber pieces you set aside earlier? Try and get two very thin slices and you can shape them and make them look like flowers. For a video tutorial on how to cut the mandarins and kiwis click here. I didn't do this myself but you can also cut out the strawberries into roses, for a video tutorial click here. Please share your beautiful creations on #foodie_moovies Arroz de Muerto The calavera, or sugar skull, is a staple of Day of the Dead celebrations. You'll see for yourself throughout the movie how important this is to the living and the dead. The skull is traditionally created with sugar but I wanted to do something a little different so I decide to deconstruct a SPAM musubi, which my kids LOVE! You'll end up with a beautiful sugar skull look-alike along with dinner that's going to be a hit with the family! NOTE: Before starting this your going to need to purchase a skeleton mold. I purchased mine at Amazon. As for the squeeze bottle you might not even need it. It just depends on how your going to eat your arroz de muerto so it's optional. Put 1 cup of rice to cook. I like to add 1/2 cup of sushi rice and 1/2 cup of jasmine rice I do this to make sure the rice is nice and sticky so that the decorations stick to it nicely. While the rice is cooking chop up your SPAM and fry it. SPAM is safe to eat out of the can so just fry it to your liking. While your rice and SPAM are cooking, chop your bell peppers. Depending on your decorations will depend on the size, my recommendation is to keep the pieces small, it will stick better to the rice. Once your rice is cooked give it about 10-15 minutes to slightly cool (do not refrigerate to speed the cooling process up, it might dry out your rice). Add the rice into your mold and make sure you push it in the mold as much as you can. Let is sit for about 5 minutes. Then transfer it to you serving dish. NOTE: for your serving dish I recommend something round. The dish I'm using is about 12.5 inches, you can definitely use a smaller one it just depends if your going to make a SPAM flower crown. 4. Once your rice mold is on the plate cut out circles for your eyes and stripes for the teeth out of the seaweed sushi sheets The seaweed should soften, mold and stick to the rice. 5. Start decorating your calavera! cut, size, chop again and resize if needed. This is the part where you get creative and have some fun. Slightly push the peppers into the rice for a better hold. NOTE: The cilantro should easily stick but if it doesn't feel free to use those toothpicks, just give your family/friends a heads up if there's toothpicks in there before they dig in and eat. 6. Once your calavera is decorated add the spam around the top of the head to look like a flower crown. Top them off with some peppers or cilantro for added color. Take some pictures and enjoy your work of art before it's gone! and please share your beautiful creations on #foodie_moovies NOTE: My family used the seaweed sheets like tortillas and filled it like a tacos with peppers, spam, and cilantro. Don't forget to top it off with that sweet delicious teriyaki sauce. "Remember Me" Hot Coco Throughout the movie I can't remember when you didn't see those beautiful orange marigold flowers. The reason why this flower in particular is so important in the movie and to this celebration is because It's believed that the marigolds guide the spirits to their altars using their vibrant colors and pungent scent. So for our dessert we'll be having marigold marshmallows floating on top of some delicious Mexican hot chocolate with of course a side of pan muerto (day of the dead bread) or pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) dealers choice! I'll be having both! NOTE: My 10 year old twins had a lot of fun time making these, it was easy for them and very little cleaning for me, yay! Grab a jumbo marshmallow and cut in half as shown in picture Turn sticky side of Marshmallow up and set aside Grab a couple of the miniature marshmallows and cut them in a diagonal. Depending on how many flowers you make will depend on how many minis you'll need. It's usually 10-13 pieces per flower so they'll be plenty of leftovers. 4. Pour orange sanding sugar on a plate 5. Grab a sliced miniature using the sticky side push down on the sugar 6. The sugar should stick and should look like so 7. Grab you jumbo marshmallow (sticky side up) and start sticking your petals. Start around the outside and work your way to the middle. 8. You might have to reinforce some of the petals but it should stick pretty easily. 9. Make your Chocolate Ibarra before, after, or while your making your marigolds. 10. Grab a mug, pour your hot Coco, place your marigold on top and enjoy! (they will stay afloat for a while!) Please share your beautiful creations on #foodie_moovies Q&A with the kids 1. You magically get sent to the other side, who do you go looking for? 2. Have you lost someone special to you? Tell me a happy memory you have of them. 3. What would you like people to remember about you when you pass over? #foodie_Moovies and share your creations with us!
